Waimarino Lodge Opens on Lake Wakatipu with 20 Private Villas

A New Chapter for Lake Wakatipu's Luxury Scene

Waimarino Lodge opened its doors in November 2026 on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, introducing Queenstown's most intimate luxury accommodation experience. The property spans 15 acres of lakefront land, housing 20 individual villas and a single four-bedroom residence designed for guests seeking privacy and direct lake access.

The lodge's architecture responds to its dramatic alpine setting, with each villa positioned to capture unobstructed views across the lake toward the Remarkables mountain range. Native schist stone and weathered timber frame the structures, materials that echo the surrounding Central Otago landscape while maintaining contemporary comfort standards.

Villa Design and Amenities

Each of the 20 villas operates as a standalone retreat, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the lake views and private terraces extending toward the water. The interiors blend New Zealand craftsmanship with international luxury standards, incorporating locally sourced merino wool textiles and handcrafted furniture from South Island artisans.

The four-bedroom lakeside residence serves groups requiring additional space, with a private kitchen, dining area, and dedicated staff quarters. This property includes direct boat access and a private section of shoreline for exclusive use.

Wellness and Recreation Facilities

The property's lakeside sauna represents one of its most distinctive features, constructed partially over the water to allow for direct lake plunges year-round. Adjacent to the sauna, guests access a dedicated wellness complex housing a full-service spa and yoga studio with panoramic lake views.

The outdoor dining area extends from the main lodge building onto a series of terraced platforms that follow the natural shoreline contours. Executive Chef Sarah Morrison, formerly of The Bunker restaurant, oversees the kitchen operation, focusing on Central Otago wines and locally sourced ingredients from the region's farms and vineyards.

Helicopter Access and Activities

Waimarino Lodge maintains its own helicopter pad, enabling guests to arrive directly from Queenstown Airport or access remote locations throughout the Southern Alps. The property partners with several local operators for heli-skiing, glacier landings, and wine country tours.

The lodge's location provides immediate access to Lake Wakatipu's recreational opportunities, including kayaking, fishing, and chartered boat excursions. Mountain biking trails connect directly from the property to the Queenstown Trail network.

Arrival and Reservations

Guests can reach Waimarino Lodge by helicopter, private boat, or road transfer from Queenstown Airport, located 25 minutes away by car. The property operates year-round, with peak seasons during the Southern Hemisphere summer months (December through March) and winter ski season (June through September).

Room rates begin at NZD $2,800 per night for villa accommodations, with the four-bedroom residence available from NZD $8,500 per night. All rates include breakfast, afternoon tea, and access to wellness facilities. The property accepts reservations through its direct booking system and select luxury travel partners.
